The book “ The Giver” tells us about a futuristic society which is controlled by a committee of Elders who keeps watch over the community at all times. In this society, there is no suffering. Everything is right and perfect. This is because the committee has eliminated all bad things. Everybody follows strict rules. When children turn twelve, they are assigned a career.
Jonas is one boy in the community. He lives with his father, a nurturer, his mother, who works at the Department of Justice, and his sister, Lily. Jonas usually goes to school with friends and has a close friend named Asher. They always play together. Jonas is 11 years old but turning 12. He is confused about what career he will be assigned to at the Ceremony of Twelve. Sometimes, he cannot share his feelings with his family. Jonas is more special than other people in his community.
Jonas is interested in several things. He likes to volunteer and help people. He is very clever and has visions. Many times, he thinks differently, and sees things differently. For example, he is able to see color, while others cannot.
Jonas is very different from the rest of the community and I do not think he should stay here. I think maybe he would like to be free and escape.
