We should use genetic engineering to improve nature

What is genetic engineering? It is a laboratory technique used by scientists to change the DNA of living organisms. Genetic engineering is used to clone human or modify crops. Although we should be proud of our science knowledge, it is against the law of nature created by God. If we don’t keep the natural law, soon we will have terrible problems. Genetic engineering may seem advantageous at present but in long term, it has many disadvantages. Today, genetic engineering is used in therapeutic cloning and improving crop quality and production as well as the possibility of human cloning. However, because it tampers with nature, I strongly feel that it should be forbidden.

Many people say that cloning human is useful for couples who cannot have children by nature. Through cloning, they can have children. However, just think about the implication. Try to think what will happen if many people are identical to one another, with the same face, body and mind. According to the position paper of the Catholic Medical Association, the dignity and uniqueness of every human person is founded upon biblical and natural truths that have guided us up to our modern era. Implications of that teaching are clear. God chose Adam and Eve to be the first husband and wife and the first parents. From the beginning God created marriage to fill Heaven with saints. Marriage today has that same divine purpose. For the love between husband and wife, God creates children to be reared and educated by their parents. This is the norm. Therefore cloning human for whatever purpose is against the natural law of God and his moral code.

Supporters of genetic engineering claim that this knowledge can be used for therapeutic cloning to produce tissues that are a perfect genetic match of a person and so help grow cells to treat diseases such as strokes, spinal, injuries, diabetes, Parkinson’s or Alzheimer. However, studies show that there have been terrible problems about abnormal cells and side effects in patients.

Lastly, at the present, some plants and animals are cloned (LMOs or GMOs) by scientists. Some plants such as papaya and tomato have been cloned. Once again, while these products show improvement in quality and shelf-life, they are dangerous to human health. Cloned animals such as sheep and house-fly proved to be unhealthy, weak and finally died.

Although tempering to genetic engineering has some advantages, we should not tamper nature with genetic engineering, especially about cloning human being. It is an act against the creation of God. GMO crops prove to be dangerous to our health and cloned animals have died because of weakness and abnormal cells. Thus, we must join hand to protect natural law and not tamper nature with genetic engineering
